November 6th, 2008. Yeah, that's just how long its been. I thought I could let WHB fade back into obscurity, or rather let it fade into further obscurity. But after reconnecting with a couple running mates this week, I decided I at least owed a couple people a bit of a post-mortem on the World Hoops Blog project. I started WHB because I was interested in the globalization of the game of basketball. For a few months there it seemed that basketball was headed down the road that professional soccer had traveled. I thought (and still hold onto hope) that basketball would be the first American sport to spur a true international dialogue with fans from the US discussing pro teams from Europe, Australia, Asia, or wherever top flight hoops was being played. I still think that there's a chance the NBA and FIBA can work together to develop a sustainable international community with more freedom of movement for players and freedom of information for fans. But, as with many internet-borne projects, real world commitments and events got in the way. Working on the overnight shift and not having cable (by decision rather than economic burden) made it difficult to watch any basketball. A problem best illustrated by a question I threw at my buddy earlier this week via AIM. I was skimming through Deadspin.com when I was forced to ask my friend Seth, "Why is Nate Robinson wearing a green Knicks jersey and dunking a lime ball over Dwight Howard?" I am able to keep tabs on the Sixers through local radio. But to try to talk to you guys intelligently about basketball while not watching any regular season games seemed incredibly fraudulent to me. What I can tell you with the most stunning honesty is that since November I have wondered how my blogosphere penpals were doing. Specifically calling out by name C-Murder at And One (who now has a Cavaliers press pass, which can only mean trouble for LeBron), Mookie (the crowning jewel in the Bloguin network) and John "The Real Deal" Rillie (who put on his gorilla suit and went bananas all over the NBL this past week). For the few that remember WHB and may even miss that morning Skip Pass, I'll leave you this very cryptic update: Things are a foot at the Circle K. For the precious few that I miss speaking with, I'll let you know that the Gmail account over on the right bar is still valid and I'll leave you guys and girls with this even more cryptic update: Okay, what's next. |
