Breakers v Hawks | photo: NZBreakers.com

New Zealand Breakers 114 (Penney 41, Bruton 15, Forman 14)
Wollongong Hawks 93 (Saville 22, Franklin 16, Rychart 16)

The story of the day was Kirk Penney. The Wisconsin alum put on his gorilla suit and went bananas all over the Wollongong defense. 16 from 22 from the field, including 6 from behind the arc (60% from 3pt range). He also grabbed 7 rebounds and earned 3 assists.

CJ Bruton helped the Breakers get out early, but the Hawks were able to hang tough, drawing even several times and taking a 51:50 lead into the intermission. New Zealand was able to pull ahead going into the 4th quarter, but it was the final stanza that was ultimately Wollongong's demise. In the final 12 minutes the Breakers were able to find an extra gear and put 35 points on the board against Wollongong's 18.

I have a feeling Wollongong has more results like this in the 2008/9 championship.
